Lemforder Sway Bar Link and Lemforder Strut Mount FAQ: What to Check First

I coordinate rush parts orders for repair shops. In most urgent calls, a car is already on a lift, the customer is waiting, and the part name has already been decided. That part name is often wrong. This FAQ is the list I mentally run through before I send an expensive order out, because the real job is not rushing parts; the real job is avoiding the second order that arrives after the first one didn't fix anything.

Clunking Over Bumps: Should I Order a Lemforder Sway Bar Link?

A sway bar link is a fair first suspect when a car clunks in parking lots or over sharp bumps. A worn Lemforder sway bar link usually has play in the ball socket. Jack up the side that is making the noise, support the control arm, and grab the link with both hands. If you can move the ball joint by hand or the boot is torn and dry, the link is done. If it feels tight, do not keep replacing chassis parts by guesswork.

I learned this lesson the annoying way. A shop returned a control arm after a sway bar link replacement did not cure a clunk. We sent the replacement arm, but the actual problem was a worn track bar bushing (note to self: ask for a video before quoting a second part). Also, most factory service procedures say to tighten sway bar link fasteners at normal ride height. If the installer torques the link with the wheels hanging, the replacement itself can bind and clunk. That is an installation issue, not a parts issue.

If the other side is original and the car has high mileage, replacing both is a sound recommendation. The old side has the same wear, and the labor is already being paid. A parts supplier who insists on selling a pair even when the other side is six months old is not providing advice; they are padding an order.

Why Replace the Lemforder Strut Mount When You Replace the Strut?

I would not replace a strut mount automatically at every strut job, but I also would not leave one in place if it is going to create a comeback. If the original mount has high mileage, the bearing feels notchy, or the rubber has collapsed, the symptoms will not go away just because the new strut feels stiff.

A worn strut mount can pop during steering, clunk over bumps, and let the spring sit at an odd angle. It can also hide behind a part that looks fine from the outside. It is a component that should fail slowly and predictably, which is exactly what you want when the strut is already out of the car.

A customer asked me for a 2007 Jeep Wrangler radiator before doing a pressure test. That car often has a plastic-tank radiator, and hairline cracks at the tank seam can seal when cold and open when hot. If there is dried coolant residue near the seam, you have probably found the leak. If the radiator surface looks clean and the system still loses pressure, check the water pump weep hole, the thermostat housing, and the heater hoses before condemning the radiator.

And if the coolant is full of bubbles or the engine overheats a few minutes after startup, a new 2007 Jeep Wrangler radiator will not fix it. That points to combustion gas entering the cooling system. That needs a block test, not another radiator.

Before you order anything else, bleed the cooling system properly. If the system is bled and the cap is good, stop guessing and run a combustion leak test. That is the point where a cracked head gasket or a cracked head becomes the thing to prove or rule out, not just a scary possibility.

Does a Loud F150 Muffler Mean It Needs To Be Replaced?

Before you order an F150 muffler, find out where the noise is actually coming from. Exhaust leaks ahead of the muffler are notorious for sounding just like a bad muffler. A rusted clamp joint or a leaking resonator flange can make the whole truck sound open and drone on the highway.

If the F150 muffler itself has a rusted seam, a crushed outlet, or an internal rattle, replacing it makes sense. If the noise appears only on cold start and gradually quiets, look at the exhaust manifold gasket or the donut gasket at the pipe connection. Those are often cheaper and harder to see. I would rather sell the correct gasket than watch someone pay labor twice for a muffler that was never the problem.

How to Tell If You Have a Cracked Head Gasket

People use cracked head gasket to mean several different failures, and the difference matters. The head gasket can fail between a cylinder and a coolant passage, between two cylinders, or at the outer edge of the bore. A cracked cylinder head can also produce many of the same symptoms. Unless you have a borescope, look for a group of clues instead of a single smoking gun.

  • Coolant level drops with no visible external leak.
  • White vapor from the exhaust smells sweet, even after the engine is warm.
  • The cooling system builds pressure very quickly after startup.
  • Continuous bubbles stream through the coolant reservoir, not just the normal burp when the thermostat opens.
  • The oil on the dipstick looks milky or lighter than normal.

A compression test and a block test are the two methods I trust most. The block test uses a fluid that changes color if combustion gases are present in the coolant. It does not require pulling the cylinder head. If you have a cracked head gasket, one of these tests should point to it.

One warning: do not rely on only one clue. A sweet-smelling exhaust on a cold morning can also come from a leaking intake manifold gasket or a heater core issue. A compression test is cheaper than a head gasket set and far cheaper than a cylinder head. If you are trying to tell whether you have a cracked head gasket, let the test decide.
