Here's what I tell them: don't wait, and don't go cheap. A worn control arm doesn't just wear itself out. What I mean is, it accelerates wear on everything around it—the tie rod end, the strut, even the wheel bearing. I've seen a failing control arm take out a set of tie rods within a few months. Ignore it long enough, and a $150 repair becomes a $600 one.

Here's where I might surprise you: if you're flipping a car, or driving a beater through one last winter, the budget parts might be fine. I know that sounds odd coming from someone on the parts side of the counter. But the math tells a different story in this specific case.
Most buyers focus on the part price and completely miss the total cost equation. The total cost of a control arm replacement is part price + labor + alignment + the risk of doing it twice. That $35 control arm might develop play at 12,000 miles. Then you're paying another $90 in labor and another $100 for an alignment. The "cheap" part just cost you $225 in total. A premium control arm at $80, going 60,000 miles, works out to less per mile—and you don't get stranded.
But if the car won't be yours in six months, that long-term math doesn't apply. You won't be around for the failure. I'm not endorsing that logic for a car your family rides in—please don't do that. But for a flip or a bridge car, it's a defensible call.
Just be honest with yourself about which scenario you're in. I've had customers argue they were in this one while describing their only family vehicle. How to Tell Which Scenario You're In
If you're not sure, ask yourself these three questions:

- How long do you plan to keep the car? More than two years? Buy quality and move on. Less than six months? The budget route is defensible.
- Is the car modified or driven hard? Then OEM-level accuracy matters more than price. Cheap parts on a hard-driven car fail faster—and usually at the worst possible moment.
The "While You're In There" Check: Cooling System
One thing I wish more customers did: when the front end is already torn apart for suspension work, take a look at the cooling system. The radiator, the hoses, the expansion tank—it's all right there, and you're already paying for the labor to be in that area.
We didn't always have a formal inspection checklist for this at our shop. That cost us once, when we replaced a control arm and a tie rod on a sedan, and a week later the radiator started leaking from a pinhole.
