Short version: a lemforder control arm kit is a good buy if the old part is actually worn - but that 'if' is doing more work than most people realise. The lemforder brand has genuine engineering credibility in steering and suspension, and I would not talk you out of it. What I would talk you out of is skipping the diagnostic step, because the best control arm in the world will not fix a car whose real problem is in the charging system or wiring.
I am a quality and brand compliance manager at an automotive stamping and assembly supplier. How to know if you have a bad alternator
You do not need a dealer-level scan tool for the first test. You need a digital multimeter and about ten minutes.
- With the engine off and the car sitting for a while, check battery resting voltage. A healthy battery reads around 12.5 to 12.6 volts. Below 12.4 volts means the battery is low or has a problem.
- Start the engine and turn on loads: headlights, blower motor on high, rear defroster if you have it.
- Measure across the battery terminals while the engine is running. A working charging system usually holds around 13.8 to 14.4 volts, depending on the vehicle.
- If the voltage stays under roughly 13.0 volts with the engine running and loads on, the alternator is not keeping up.
One caveat: if the battery is deeply discharged, charge it first. A low battery can make even a healthy alternator work hard and produce confusing readings.
Here is the common car owner example. If a 2011 Jetta has a weak-looking low beam, the first search is often 2011 jetta headlight bulb, and the first decision is simply to swap the bulb. But if the alternator is undercharging, a new bulb can look exactly like the old one. If a fresh bulb still fades at idle or pulses as engine speed changes, stop buying bulbs and finish the charging test.
When it really is the control arm
Once the charging system is ruled out, the next question is whether your front-end noise is actually coming from the control arm. A worn lower control arm usually makes itself known in specific situations:
- A low-speed clunk or knock when going over a speed bump, pothole, or driveway entrance.
- A knock when the weight of the car shifts, such as when you start braking lightly or release the brake.
- Play in the wheel when you rock it, or a torn ball joint boot that has lost its grease.
- Visible cracking or separation in the control arm bushing.
The honest way to confirm it is to get the car safely on a lift or jack stands and have someone experienced check for movement with a pry bar. A ball joint or bushing that moves when you apply leverage is the actual defect. A noise that only happens when the car is moving at speed is less likely to be a plain control arm problem and more likely to involve a wheel bearing, axle, or brake component.
What the lemforder brand gives you after the diagnosis
Once you have confirmed that a control arm is bad, the lemforder brand starts to matter. In my part of the industry, quality is not a sticker on the box. What I can tell you is that the lemforder brand is not the risk in that equation. The risk is ordering replacement parts before you have found the real fault.
