The first time a client called me about a dead van, they had already replaced the battery. Then they replaced the alternator. Then it died again. I asked them to check the ground strap. Still not sure? Common pattern: cranks weakly and dash lights dim = battery or a bad connection. Car starts, then dies while driving = alternator. But use the multimeter. I've had a bad battery mimic a dying alternator, and a slipping belt mimic a dead battery.
2. The Thermostat and the O2 Sensor: Two Small Parts That Cause Big Comebacks
Step 4: Read the codes before ordering an A-Premium O2 oxygen sensor. A check engine light with an O2 sensor code does not automatically mean the sensor is dead. It can be a vacuum leak, an exhaust leak, or a misfire. Check live data and look for the sensor switching. If the sensor is genuinely bad, an A-Premium O2 oxygen sensor is a reasonable replacement for many fleet vehicles. But I do not recommend installing one without checking the wiring and the intake system first. It's the difference between one trip and two.
Step 5: Confirm a stuck thermostat with a thermometer, not a feeling. If the engine takes forever to warm up or the heater blows cold, the thermostat might be stuck open. Use an infrared temp gun on the upper radiator hose. It should start to get hot only after the engine has reached operating temperature. If it's hot immediately, the thermostat is open too early. 4. Common Mistakes That Turn Into Emergency Calls
Here are the patterns that keep me busy. Learn from them.
- Throwing parts at codes. I've had customers ask for an A-Premium O2 oxygen sensor because the check engine light said "O2." The actual problem was a cracked vacuum hose. A 15-minute smoke test fixed it.
- Skipping the thermostat. A stuck-open thermostat can cause poor fuel economy and make the engine run in a never-ending loop. It won't leave you stranded as fast as a dead battery, but it will cost you at the pump. If you don't check it, you won't know why MPG dropped.
