How to Choose and Install a Lemforder Sway Bar Link (A 3-Step Field Guide)

This covers three steps: selecting the correct part, preparing for the swap, and the actual install. I have done this on a Saturday afternoon with a client waiting and on a production line with 45 minutes of downtime. The process holds.

Step 1: Confirm You Have the Right Part (The 10-Minute Check)

Most swaps go sideways not because the job is hard, but because the box contains the wrong piece. I once paid $180 in overnight freight for what should have been a $35 part. The vendor had shipped the rear link for the same vehicle generation. Looked identical in the catalog photo. It was not.

Do this before you lift the car:

  • Match the OEM number. Pull the existing link if possible. The Lemforder part should carry the same OEM casting number. If yours says 1K0 505 465, the box should match. Do not rely on the 'fits models 2005–2010' line alone. Those catalogs are wrong more often than vendors admit.
  • Measure the center-to-center distance. Sway bar links vary by a few millimeters. I keep a cheap digital caliper ($20, Amazon) in the toolbox. Measure from the center of the top stud to the center of the bottom stud. If the replacement is off by 5mm or more, the bar will sit at the wrong angle. The car will handle oddly, and you will be doing it again.
  • Check the thread pitch on the studs. Lemforder uses metric fine thread (M10x1.25 or M12x1.5 depending on application). If your old nut threads on the new stud with resistance in the first two turns, stop. Cross-threading a control arm bracket is a 30-minute mistake that turns into a 2-hour extraction job.
In October 2024, a client needed a sway bar link for a 2017 Audi A4 before a track event. The catalog listed two options. I pulled the old part, measured 265mm center-to-center, and the database showed 260mm and 270mm. We ordered the 270mm. It was correct. The 260mm would have been too short, causing preload on the bar. That 5mm would have been a bad Saturday.

Step 2: Prepare the Workspace and the Bolts (15 Minutes, Save 90 Later)

The link itself takes ten minutes to swap. The seized bolts, on a car from the Rust Belt, can take two hours. This is where the job lives or dies.

Three things to do before you break a single bolt loose:

First, soak the nuts. Penetrating oil (I use PB Blaster or Kroil) on both ends of the link. Give it ten minutes minimum. On a car that has seen winter salt, I spray it, go set up the jack stands, then clean the brake area. By the time I come back, the oil has worked into the threads.

Second, have backup hardware. Lemforder links come with new nuts and washers. Good. But the stud on the link itself can spin if the internal hex strip. I always have a set of replacement nuts, a thread chaser (M10x1.25 and M12x1.5), and a pair of vise grips in reach. In my experience, about one in twenty times, the stud spins. If you do not have a way to grab the stud, you are stuck.

Third, plan your access. On some vehicles (like the 2013–2018 VW Golf), the upper bolt is tight against the strut tower. A standard ratchet will not fit. I use a 13mm or 18mm wrench (depending on the link) and a short extension. Check clearance before you start. If you need a crowfoot or a wobble socket, get it now. Walking back to the toolbox ten times adds up.

Most people skip this step. They assume the bolts will come off because the car is only five years old. I have seen a 2020 Subaru with a link so corroded the nut broke the stud. The car was three years old at the time. Salt does not care about age.

Step 3: The Install (And the Two Things That Get Done Wrong)

Installing a sway bar link is not hard. Getting the preload and the torque right separates a job that lasts 50,000 miles from one that starts clunking at 5,000.

Getting the Preload Right

The sway bar link should be tightened with the suspension under load. This means the car is on the ground, or the control arm is raised to ride height with a jack. If you tighten the link with the wheel hanging free, the bushings are twisted at static ride height. Every time the suspension moves over a bump, the bushing fights itself. It will wear, and it will make noise.

I learned this the hard way on a BMW E90 in 2022. Installed the links, torqued everything, dropped the car. Clunk on the first turn. Had to loosen, re-torque with the car on ramps, and the noise disappeared. That cost me an extra hour of labor I had not budgeted.

How I do it: get the car on ramps or a lift, loosen the bolt at the lower control arm, let the suspension settle, then torque it. If I am on jack stands, I raise the control arm with a floor jack until the car is at ride height (check the gap between the tire and the wheel well), then final torque.

Torque to Spec, Not to 'Feel'

The Lemforder link uses a nylon lock nut. Torque matters. Under-torque and the nut backs off. Over-torque and you deform the stud or crush the bushing too tight, limiting the arm's range of motion.

Typical values:

  • M10 bolt: 25–35 ft-lb (depending on the specific application)
  • M12 bolt: 40–55 ft-lb
  • Always verify against the model-specific data. I keep a printed page from the factory service manual in the toolbox. If I cannot find it, I go mid-range: 30 ft-lb for M10, 48 ft-lb for M12.

If you have an inch-lb torque wrench, convert. Most smaller links are in the 300–400 in-lb range. The difference between 30 ft-lb and 40 ft-lb on an M10 is the difference between a good joint and a stripped thread.

In my experience, on a scale of 1 to 10, the sway bar link job is a 2 for difficulty and a 7 for getting the details wrong. The components are simple. The consequences of skipping the preload step or using a guess on torque are what make the phone ring two months later.

Things That Go Wrong (And How to Avoid Them)

Counterfeit parts. Lemforder is frequently counterfeited. The real part has a specific hologram sticker, the machining on the stud is clean, and the packaging has consistent fonts. If the box looks faded or the logo is slightly off, send it back. I had a batch of fake parts from an online marketplace in 2023. They fit, but the boot lasted 4,000 miles. The client was not happy.

Using an impact gun to install. High torque from an impact gun can spin the stud internally and damage the link. Hand-tight, then torque wrench. Period.

Forgetting to grease the bushing contact points. Many Lemforder links are sealed. Some have a grease fitting. If there is a zerck fitting, give it a pump. If not, ensure the bushing is seated cleanly. A dry bushing on a sway bar link is a noise complaint waiting to happen.

Not replacing both sides. If one link is bad, the other is not far behind. On a customer's car, I recommend replacing both. On my own car, I ignored this advice once. Two months later, I was under the car doing the other side. The extra 15 minutes would have saved me an afternoon.
