A Cost Controller's 7-Step Checklist for Buying LEMFÖRDER Motor Mounts

If a supplier's warranty excludes the most common installation context, it's effectively no warranty. Red flag. We once had a claim denied because the shop wasn't "factory-authorized"—even though the part failed from internal rubber delamination, not installation error.

The warranty wording that matters is not how long it lasts. It's which failure modes are covered. If the document doesn't mention rubber separation or fluid leaks, the warranty is a formality, not protection.

I have mixed feelings about aftermarket warranty terms overall. Part of me understands why brands write exclusions so broadly—bad installs create noise. Another part notes that the fine print has gotten so aggressive that "warranty" barely factors into my purchase decisions anymore. I rely on test data instead.

Step 6: Request the Test Report—Not Just the Marketing Sheet

Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), claims like "OE quality" or "original equipment fit" should be substantiated with evidence. When a supplier says "it's OEM spec," I ask for the fatigue test report, temperature range data, and load-bearing numbers that back it up.

I wish I had tracked these requests more carefully from the start. What I can say anecdotally is that about one in five suppliers can produce a real test report on the first ask. The rest send a marketing PDF. Those go in the "do not buy" pile.

The same process applies outside engine mounts. I used it when sourcing KTM LED headlight assemblies for a customer's build—the test data confirmed the light output claims. And when we needed water pump submersible units for the shop's drainage pit, I ran the same checklist. Different products, same math.

Oh, and one more thing about test reports: make sure the report covers the full mount assembly, not just the metal bracket. A report that only tests the stamping is not a test of the motor mount.

Step 7: Bench-Measure Before You Install

Before any engine mount goes on a vehicle, measure:

  • Mount height uncompressed, compared against the OEM spec
  • Stud spacing and thread pitch
  • Bolt hole alignment on the bracket

What most people don't realize is that even reputable brands like LEMFÖRDER update part geometry during revised production lots. A mount listed for a 2019-2021 model might have a different bracket shape in current production. The catalog number is correct. The physical part can still be the wrong revision for the application. The ten-minute bench check catches this while the car is still on the lift.

While I'm on process: you know the old question—how many feet should you signal before you turn? Most state DMV guides say 100 feet, and the exact distance varies by state, so verify your local law. The principle of giving early notice works for parts ordering, too. I give suppliers 2-3 weeks of forecast visibility. That head start is the difference between getting exactly the right parts vs. scrambling on a rush order.

Common Mistakes I Still See

Buying by photo. "It looks the same" is not a specification. Part photos are marketing material, not engineering data.

Ignoring hydraulic vs. solid rubber mounts. If the factory fitment is a hydraulic mount, a solid rubber replacement changes the NVH behavior of the entire front subframe. The car will feel different, and the mount may fail earlier.

Assuming hardware is included. If the quote doesn't say bolts and sleeves are included, they aren't. Replacement bolt kits cost more than the original package—and reusing old bolts on a new mount is a great way to introduce new NVH problems.

Skipping the production date on the box. Rubber and hydraulic fluid age even on a shelf. A mount from three years ago isn't equivalent to a fresh production batch. Check the date code.

Bottom Line

No supplier is perfect, and LEMFÖRDER isn't automatically the right answer for every vehicle. For a high-mileage fleet vehicle that's already at 180,000 miles, a budget mount might be the rational choice. For a customer's low-mileage BMW that they plan to keep, the engineering data and build quality of a LEMFÖRDER mount justify the premium.

My real advice is simpler than choosing a brand: measure what you're buying. Rubber durometer. Stamping edges. Test report. Total cost. None of these take longer than fifteen minutes, and they're exactly the checks that separate a one-year part from a five-year part.
